Alcohol State Certification Laws- Vary By State

So many people ask me  questions on this topic: Alcohol  State Certification Laws.

What states require a bartending license? In what states can I bartend at 18? Do I need a license to bartend in Fl? and they mention what state’s that they live in. So I would like to answer some of your questions. Some people are confused..because some schools call a diploma a bartending license. And you do not need a diploma to Bartend.

First we will discuss a bartending  license and Certification Card:  People ask if they need a license to bartend  in Fl or other States? No you do not need a license to bartend. There is one State that calls a certification card a license and that State is Wisconsin . And that license is also A certification Card.

If the State you live in requires that you take a class  you can take the course on line or go to the class . After taking and passing  the Alcohol Certification course you do receive a certification card to put in your wallet once  you complete the Alcohol Certification program.

You do need to be Certified in curtain states -which means- All you need to do is to  take and pass an approved responsible alcohol service class if mandated by your state.

When you take the class the class  will cover Topics such as How to properly check a Persons Id, How to spot a fake Id, How to tell if someone is Intoxicated , How to cut someone off,  and the  responsibilities/ liabilities of the server.

Some states require all servers of alcohol attend and pass an approved responsible Alcohol Service class. The three primary certification classes are Tips-Training and intervention procedures for servers of  alcohol .Serv Safe program by the National Restaurant  Association Educational Foundation, and Learn to Serve, There are some states that have there own certification  program Texas and Tennessee has the TABC program  most all bars and restaurants require the TABC certification in these two states.  Texas approves on line certification but Tennessee doe’s not allow on line certification. All Tennessee students must get certified on premise.

The only State that I know of that calls a certification a license is Wisconsin. The Wisconsin certification
is called a”bartender license

The States that you need to be Certified are: WA, OR, UT, NM, TX, LA, AL, TN,WI,DC, MD, DE,VT
The next list of states vary by city: NV, MN ,KY, MA,RI
The next list managers only: MI
*The rest of the states you do not need to be certified to be a bartender.  In these states it is: Voluntary Certification but still benefits the server. There are rules and regulations regarding what is required to become a bartender in these states. So you need to check your state laws before you serve any alcohol.
Voluntary Certification States: Fl, GA, SC, NC, NE,VA, WV, OH, IN, IL, MO, KS, OK,NE, SD, ND, MT,WY, CO, AZ, CA, ID, NY

Fla does not require you to get certified. But there are States that do. Most establishments will send the bartenders and servers to the class and pay for it. And you are right this only benefits the establishment not the bartender. It lowers there insurance .
