Do you want to know How to be a bartender? You need to learn what a bartender does while he or she is at work. Bartenders are making drinks all the time and are always multi tasking. Cleaning, Stocking, and Ringing up lots of drinks There is never a dull moment for a bartender! Here are a Few Tips for you.

To be a bartender you need to get the drinks made fast and right</strong and delivered to the customer with a smile. If you are taking a food order then you need to take the order for the drink, and the food order when the customer is ready to order, put the food order into the kitchen , make the drink and deliver the drink to the customer. When the food is ready you or a food runner will deliver the food. Make sure you check back with the customer right after the food is delivered and ask the customer if everything is ok? And ask" can I get you anything else?" If the customers drink is getting low see if they would like another drink.

Always Look around the bar during your shift to constantly to make sure no one is sitting there without a drink. If you get a new customer at the Bar or table make sure you place a drink napkin in front of the customer this is letting other bartenders or servers know that the customer is being waited on. These are just a couple of Tips to help You learn How To Be A Bartender. You can learn all the Basics from Bartendingexposed.com

To be a bartender.’ You need to know what ingredients go into a drink.” Example- If someone orders a Margarita you need to know what glass to use a margarita glass and the ingredients and how to make it. Rub half a lime around the rim of a chilled margarita glass. Dip the glass into a plate of coarse salt Put 2 oz. tequila, 3/4 oz. fresh lime juice or sour mix and 1 oz. Triple Sec or Cointreau in a cocktail shaker with cracked ice. Shake three times and strain into the glass. Garnish with a lime wedge.

How to be a bartender takes some practice. You can’t just walk into a bar and expect to know what to do. Just like any other job you need to know what to do so you can do the job professionally. Bartendingexposed teaches you the Basics of bartending. You need to study your drink recipes Bartendingexposed.com has 500 drink recipes. Study your drinks every day until you know the ingredients in them so you can make any drink fast and accurate. Make index cards with drink recipes on them. Study your basic drinks first you serve a lot of these. You never know what a customer will request. Example- 3 people walk into the bar and sit down, you walk over there place a napkin or coaster in front of each person. You can tell them what drink specials you have for that day, then find out what each person would like to drink. The first person order’s a seven and seven, the next person order’s a white Russian, and the third person order’s a beer. So what do you do first? First you get the glasses you need to make the drinks, fill the glasses with ice, get the Seagram’s 7 pour it into the glass add 7 up fill glass to the top , next glass -pour into the glass 2 oz vodka and 1 oz. oz coffee liqueur . add cream 1/2 and 1/2 fill glass{ and shake putting a shaker over the top of the glass.}shake about 3 times, add straws and serve all three drinks to the customers.

” You can ask the customer if they want a different vodka in the white Russian if you want to that is called up selling” which means you are offering a more expensive liquor which will be added instead of the bar cheaper vodka. You can do this with any drink you make. Example-Rum and coke-offer Bacardi, A cape cod offer- Gray Goose. Martini-offer expensive Gin or Vodka instead of bar liquor. Most customers will say yes Id rather have Gray goose or Smirnoff or kettle One if you offer another liquor. Some people just want the bar liquors. The cheaper liquors. These are the liquors that you use all the time Unless the other liquors are requested. If you want to be a fast bartender then you need to learn your drink recipes. Know where everything is located so you can grab things fast! Practice, practice, practice! That’s How To Be A Bartender. You can practice at home with empty liquor bottles to help you pick up speed and practice making drinks.

Do I have to go to school to be a bartender? The answer is no. There are a few ways that you can acquire the knowledge and eventually move into the position as a bartender without going to school. It might take some time to get into that position, because you will need to learn what the Bartender duties and responsibilities are behind the bar.

                                              Server and Cocktail Waitress

If you already work in a restaurant or bar as a server or cocktail waitress and are serving drinks to your customers, you will be going to the bar to pick up the drinks that you have ordered from the bartender. Your job as a server or cocktail waitress would be placing the correct glass on your tray for the drinks you need for your order. The bartender adds the ice, and liquor to the glasses sitting on your tray and you add the mix, garnish and straw.

The bartender already knows by looking at your drink order ticket and glasses on you tray what liquor to place in the glass. The bartender knows if you have placed the right glass on the tray and if the glass is not correct for the drink you need, the bartender will change the glass. You add the coke and straw and garnish. example:( high ball glass- rum & coke.) So you fill the glass with ice, the bartender adds the Rum, then you add the mix( coke). If you have a few drinks to get then you just do this the same way. You get the correct glasses, add the ice, add the mix, and you add the correct garnish. The bartender will make all the Frozen drinks behind the bar, you will add the garnish. Cherries, orange slice etc.

All restaurants and Bars are not the same, you might have to just add the ice and garnish to the glasses and the bartender will add the mixes . OR The Bartender will fill your order Making all the drinks you requested and place them to the side with your ticket, and you will not be doing anything except picking up your drink order. Every Restaurant and Bar will tell you exactly what you will be required to do.

                                                    Bar Back

A Bartender is very busy making drinks and the more drinks that are made the more money the bar takes in. So a bar owner will hire a Bar Back to help the bartender. A bar back is responsible for helping the bartender to keep everything stocked meaning- Stocking Beer, ice, Glasses, what ever the bartender needs.

You will be working behind the bar with the bartender or bartenders. In some bars there are 3 or 4 bartenders working behind the bar. The bar might have more than 1 Bar back helping to assist the bartenders. Your responsibilities as a Bar Back will be getting clean glasses, putting ice into the ice bins, stocking beer, liquor bottles, prepping fruit- garnishes, changing beer kegs, picking up food, taking out garbage, and cleaning the bar. Every Bar has different duties for the bar back.

Being a Bar back is a perfect opportunity for you to work with a bartender and to learn what is expected of you to do behind the bar. When the bar is slow “You can ask the bartender if you can wait on customers.” Being able to wait on customers depends on the bar you are working at. Some Bars will let you train with a Bartender if the bar is slow. If you get permission from the Bar manager. Most bars will not let the bar back serve drinks because the bartender needs your help as a bar back.

If you are hired as a Bar Back you are a bar back and you are not able to make any drinks, you just do your duties as a bar back.

You can learn quite a lot working side by side with the bartender. Once you know how to prepare the drinks and what duties are required as a bartender then you will be able to do the job your self. You can move into the position as Bartender. You just talk to the bar manager and say I would like to bartend I have been here for a while and I know how to prepare drink’s, and what my responsibilities are behind the bar.

Most likely the bar manager will promote you to a bartender because you have been working in that bar and they like to hire people that already are familiar with the bar. The bar manager knows you and your work ethics. So while you are a bar back you need to do the best job that you can do. Show the bar manager that you are a hard worker and that you want to learn how to bartend. The bar manager will be more apt to put you in that position when the position is available. This is another way to learn without having to go to a school to be a bartender.

                                              Order a Bartending e- book<strong>
You can order an e-book Bartendingexposed teaches you the basics of bartending. What to expect when you start your first job.

Bartending School? They say don’t mention this on your application ! Why you may ask? Well, most of the establishment’s want Experience. And not someone who has no idea of what to do behind a bar except TO make drinks…This person Has no experience. With real life situations. I know every situation in life is different so I will try and start out with the first basic things that a bartender needs to do to keep his or her bar running smoothly!

There is so much that goes on in a bar you need to know some of the things that you will be facing , every day is completely different! Like I have said before Bartending is Not a boring job! You have a lot of responsibility! These are Tips that a Bartending School does not teach you.

Get Organized: You must be organized. You will be multi tasking all the time. Getting drinks, ringing them up, closing tabs out, running charge cards, giving change for games or pool tables. Ordering food for people. opening a wine bottle, getting ice or filling up a juice container that just ran out, And while you are doing all these different tasks people will be talking to you. So you will have to organize yourself to accomplish everything that you need to do. To multi Task you need to look around the bar and see who is in need first. If you have a new customer wait on them first so that they have a drink. when you ring up there drink, give change to the person who needed the change while your register is open , Then take care of the next person. Sometimes people are in a hurry all of a sudden. They are ready to go. Get them taken care of. Just look around the bar and you can see who you can let wait for a minute. Someone might say I am ready to pay my Tab but they have full drinks, so you can go ahead and get a drink for someone else. then take care of the tab. Multi task! Because you know it will take them a few minutes to finish there drinks. You will be moving at a fast pace so keep focused and don’t panic! Just say I will be will be with you in just a minute. So that person knows you have acknowledged them. Organization, talking to your customers is a must. Let them know you are taking care of them. People do not realize that they are not the only one who has asked you for something. So look around the bar all the time, and get organized!

The Register: Make sure you look at the bill the customer has handed to you. I always lay the bill across the drawer I then take out the change, then I put the bill in the right slot. This method will help you so that you will not be short in your register at the end of the night. If you have 100.00 bill do not put it under your 20.00 bills because you could give this out as a 20.00.I put my 100.00 bill in the slot to the far left , then next slot 20.00, then 10.00, then 5.00, then 1.00. Some people put there large bills under the drawer. But I do not want to forget them so I do not use this method. Always check your big bills with a bill checker to make sure that the bill is not forged. Just make a mark on the bill. If the bill is real the mark will look yellowish brown. If it is Fake it will be a black mark.
Give the right change. Even if it takes you extra second count the change back to yourself. Your register is the main event in the bar! You must pay attention to how you run your register. Don’t end up short or you will pay this shortage out of your money.

Giving change back : Give change back to the customer count it back to them. Especially Large bills, And make sure if that customer is not sitting at the bar when you return with the change you wait until they return then give them there change. The reason I say this is because you are responsible up to that point for there money. Once you have given them the change and counted it back to them If they choose to leave there money on the bar that is there responsibility!
I have had customers say I had 10.00 on the bar and now its not here.. Well.. I do not take anything that they haven’t given me. I am busy and I can not watch there money on the bar. I usually let the customer know that I can not watch his money, so they need to.
Where to put the customers change It sure doesn’t seem like a very big deal right? But it can get to be a big deal! Make sure that you put there money right in front of them , people are so close together when sitting a the bar. I have had disputes over whose money was whose?? Because the money was put in between two customers. Not right next to the customer the change belonged to.

Also, watch out! I have had customers take money that wasn’t theirs not meaning to.. but when they have had a few cocktails they forget. Also I have had them take money off the bar and they know it doesn’t belong to them. Usually that person is asked to not come back to the bar! If Someone else at the bar tells you that they saw a person take money, or it happens every time that same person is at the bar and money disappears! Then we watch that person closely! And if we have them on camera they will not be allowed back into the bar. So a lot can happen with just giving the change back to a customer. These are just a couple of things that can happen if you are bartending .We will talk about more situations that can happen, so your job will be a little easier!

So many people ask me questions on this topic: Alcohol State Certification Laws.

What states require a bartending license? In what states can I bartend at 18? Do I need a license to bartend in Fl? and they mention what state’s that they live in. So I would like to answer some of your questions. Some people are confused..because some schools call a diploma a bartending license. And you do not need a diploma to Bartend.

First we will discuss a bartending license and Certification Card: People ask if they need a license to bartend in Fl or other States? No you do not need a license to bartend. There is one State that calls a certification card a license and that State is Wisconsin . And that license is also A certification Card.

If the State you live in requires that you take a class you can take the course on line or go to the class . After taking and passing the Alcohol Certification course you do receive a certification card to put in your wallet once you complete the Alcohol Certification program.

You do need to be Certified in curtain states -which means- All you need to do is to take and pass an approved responsible alcohol service class if mandated by your state.

When you take the class the class will cover Topics such as How to properly check a Persons Id, How to spot a fake Id, How to tell if someone is Intoxicated , How to cut someone off, and the responsibilities/ liabilities of the server.

Some states require all servers of alcohol attend and pass an approved responsible Alcohol Service class. The three primary certification classes are Tips-Training and intervention procedures for servers of alcohol .Serve Safe program by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation, and Learn to Serve, There are some states that have there own certification program Texas and Tennessee has the TABC program most all bars and restaurants require the TABC certification in these two states. Texas approves on line certification but Tennessee doe’s not allow on line certification. All Tennessee students must get certified on premise.

The only State that I know of that calls a certification a license is Wisconsin. The Wisconsin certification
is called a”bartender license”

The States that you need to be Certified are: WA, OR, UT, NM, TX, LA, AL, TN,WI,DC, MD, DE,VT
The next list of states vary by city: NV, MN ,KY, MA,RI
The next list managers only: MI
*The rest of the states you do not need to be certified to be a bartender. In these states it is: Voluntary Certification but still benefits the server. There are rules and regulations regarding what is required to become a bartender in these states. So you need to check your state laws before you serve any alcohol.
Voluntary Certification States: Fl, GA, SC, NC, NE,VA, WV, OH, IN, IL, MO, KS, OK,NE, SD, ND, MT,WY, CO, AZ, CA, ID, NY

Cities and Counties can over rule these laws if they are stricter. So always check with local authorities before making any decisions to serve alcohol. You can check with your local state or city government web site to verify your state’s bartending age.

In some states persons under 21 may be allowed to serve alcohol only in curtain establishments such as restaurants , in some cases a server must be a least a specific age, but younger employees may be allowed to stock coolers with alcoholic beverages or clear alcoholic beverages from tables.

Some states place conditions on on-premises servers under 21 years of age. These include requirements that a legal-age manager or supervisor be present when the underage person is serving alcoholic beverages and/or that the underage server undergo beverage server training beyond that otherwise mandated in the state. Training beyond that otherwise mandated in the state.

This is the information I have found and it seems to be very accurate and up to date.
There are 50 States in the U.S.A.that allow adults 18 or older to serve drinks as a bartender.

I am going to give you a list of states and ages so that you will be able to look at your state and age requirement. Alabama-21, Alaska-21, Arizona-21, California-21, Illinois-21, Chicago Illinois is 21, Colorado -18 ,Connecticut-18, Delaware-21, Washington-21, Florida-18, Georgia-18, Hawaii-18, Idaho-19, Illinois-18, Indiana-21-(18) with restrictions, Iowa-18, Kansas-21, Kentucky-21, Louisiana-18, Massachusetts-18, Main18, Maryland-18, Michigan-18, Minnesota-18, Mississippi-18, Missouri-21, Montana-21, Nebraska-19, Nevada-21, New Hampshire-18, New Jersey-18, New York-18, New Mexico-21, North Carolina-21, North Dakota-21,

Your Bartending Age as you can see varies from State to State. But if you get close to the age that you are able to bartend you can order a bartending book/course on line and study, then you will be prepared to look for a job when you are of age. I know many times people write and ask if they can order bartendingexposed if they are not 18. There is no reason why you can’t order a bartending book/course and start learning How to become a Bartender. It’s Legal. You can study right at home, just down load the Bartending e-book and start studying. You will be ahead of the game . And you will be prepared to start looking for a job once you turn 18, 19, or 21 . So your Bartending Age will not effect you downloading the bartending book/course when ever you are ready.

These are state laws only. Cities and counties can overrule these if they are stricter. Always check with your local authorities before making any decision to serve alcohol
